Using Vintage Murano Lighting Outside Italy — US, UK, Australia & China Guide

One of the most common questions we get from international buyers is: "Will this lamp work in my country?" The good news is that in most cases, yes — with minimal or no modification at all. Here's the honest, practical guide.

Ceiling Pendants & Chandeliers

Ceiling fixtures are hardwired directly into your home's electrical circuit by an electrician — they don't use a plug at all. This means the Italian wiring inside the lamp is irrelevant to your local electrical system. Your electrician simply connects the lamp's wires to your ceiling rose or junction box, exactly as they would with any other ceiling light.

This works the same way in the US, UK, Australia, China, and everywhere else. No rewiring of the lamp itself is needed.

The only thing to check is the bulb fitting:

  • E27 (large screw) and E14 (small screw) are the most common Italian fittings — both are widely available worldwide
  • In the US and Canada, the standard is E26 — which is almost identical to E27 and fits in the same socket with no adapter needed

Table Lamps & Floor Lamps

These use a plug, so there is one practical step depending on your country:

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

The UK runs on 230V — the same as Italy. You simply need to replace the Italian plug with a UK plug (Type G). Any electrician or even a competent DIYer can do this in minutes. Bulb fittings (E27/E14) are standard in the UK.

🇦🇺 Australia & New Zealand

Australia also runs on 230–240V — compatible with Italian wiring. You need to replace the plug with an Australian Type I plug. Again, a simple job. E27 and E14 bulbs are widely available.

🇨🇳 China

China runs on 220V, 50Hz — the same voltage as Italy, so the lamp is fully electrically compatible. China uses Type A and Type I plugs (both are common depending on the socket). A simple plug adapter or plug swap is all that's needed. E27 and E14 bulbs are widely available throughout China.

🇺🇸 United States & Canada

The US runs on 110–120V, which is different from Italy's 230V. However, this is easily solved:

  • Use a universal voltage LED bulb (100–240V) — most modern LED bulbs are universal voltage and handle both 110V and 230V automatically. Check the bulb packaging for "100–240V" and you're good to go.
  • Replace the Italian plug with a US Type A/B plug, or use a plug adapter
  • The lamp itself does not need rewiring

Universal voltage LED bulbs are inexpensive and widely available — this is the simplest solution for US buyers.

Quick Reference

Country Voltage What to do Bulb fitting
🇬🇧 UK 230V Replace plug with Type G E27 / E14 ✅
🇦🇺 Australia / NZ 230–240V Replace plug with Type I E27 / E14 ✅
🇨🇳 China 220V Plug adapter or swap (Type A / Type I) E27 / E14 ✅
🇺🇸 US / Canada 110–120V Replace plug + use universal voltage LED bulb (100–240V) E26 ≈ E27 ✅
🇪🇺 EU / most of Europe 220–240V Nothing — works as-is E27 / E14 ✅

When Is Rewiring Actually Needed?

Rewiring is only worth considering if the lamp's internal wiring is visibly damaged, brittle, or cracked — which can happen with very old pieces. We inspect every piece we sell and will flag this if relevant. In practice, the vast majority of vintage Murano lamps we stock have perfectly sound wiring and need no intervention beyond a plug change.

If you're ever unsure, just ask us before purchasing — we're happy to advise on any specific piece.
